Attributes of irrigated rice as affected by soil sodicity and potassic fertilizer application Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Carmona,Felipe de Campos; Anghinoni,Ibanor; Holzschuh,Marquel Jonas; Martins,Amanda Posselt.
Soils of the coastal plains of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, are affected by salinization, which can hamper the establishment and development of crops in general, including rice. The application of high doses of KCl may aggravate the crop damage, due to the high saline content of this fertilizer. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of K fertilizer management on some properties of rice plant, grown in soils with different sodicity levels, and determine which attribute is best related to yield. The field study was conducted in four Albaqualfs with exchangeable Na percentages of 5.6, 9.0, 21 and 32 %. The management of KCl fertilizer consisted of the application of 90 kg ha-1 K2O broadcast, 90 kg ha-1 K2O in the row and 45 kg ha-1 K2O in the row + 45 kg ha-1...

Drought tolerance in upland rice: identification of genotypes and agronomic characteristics Agronomy
Guimarães, Cleber Morais; Castro, Adriano Pereira de; Stone, Luís Fernando; Oliveira, Jaison Pereira de.
This study aimed to identify upland rice cultivars and elite lines that are tolerant to drought and the agronomic traits associated with this tolerance. Forty-one genotypes were evaluated in a randomized block design with three replications in experiments with and without water stress at the Experimental Station of Emater, in Porangatu, Goiás State, in 2011 and 2012. The first experiment was well-irrigated throughout plant development and the second experiment was irrigated only up to 40 days after emergence, after which water stress was imposed. A multivariate analysis using Ward’s method was applied, and the genotypes with and without water stress were classified into six and seven clusters, respectively, based on the average yield in the two years of...

Flooded rice yield as affected by levels of water salinity in different stages of its cycle Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Fraga,Thiago Isquierdo; Carmona,Felipe de Campos; Anghinoni,Ibanor; Genro Junior,Silvio Aymone; Marcolin,Elio.
Losses of productivity of flooded rice in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, may occur in the Coastal Plains and in the Southern region due to the use of saline water from coastal rivers, ponds and the Laguna dos Patos lagoon, and the sensibility of the plants are variable according to its stage of development. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the production of rice grains and its components, spikelet sterility and the phenological development of rice at different levels of salinity in different periods of its cycle. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in pots filled with 11 dm³ of an Albaqualf. The levels of salinity were 0.3 (control), 0.75, 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 dS m-1 kept in the water layer by adding a salt solution of sodium...

Implementation and Evaluation of an Image Analysis System for Determining Viability of Pollen Grains in Temperate Rice Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Ortega B,Rodrigo; Aresti E,Macarena; Pereira R,Iris.
Geographical and climatic factors limit the production of temperate rice (Oryza sativa L.) in Chile. Large thermal fluctuations of air and water temperatures affect the viability of pollen, causing high levels of spikelet sterility (”blanking”), resulting in reduced yields per hectare. Counting viable pollen grains, at the time of anthesis, may allow determining, ahead, whether there will be yield losses by spikelet sterility; besides, knowing the potential pollen viability serves as a powerful tool for material selection in breeding programs, and for determining which management factors may influence ”blanking”. If performed manually, counting total and viable pollen grains can be extremely tedious, producing highly variable results. The present work had...

Rice cold tolerance at the reproductive stage in a controlled environment Scientia Agricola
Cruz,Renata Pereira da; Milach,Sandra Cristina Kothe; Federizzi,Luiz Carlos.
Cold tolerance of rice (Oryza sativa L.) during the reproductive stage is important to guarantee high yield under low temperature environments. Field selection, however, does not allow identification of adequate tolerance sources and limits selection of segregating lines due to variable temperature. The objective of this study was to devise methods for distinguishing rice genotypes as to their cold tolerance at the reproductive stage when evaluated under controlled temperature. The effect of cold temperatures was investigated in six rice genotypes at 17°C for varying length of time (three, five, seven and ten days) at two reproductive stages (microsporogenesis and anthesis). Cold tolerance was measured as the percentage of reduction in panicle exsertion...
